I am passionate about the sustainable management of renewable resources, and about understanding animals and their ecology. I believe in rigorous field experiments on animals in natural conditions, together with analysis of the data that is carefully designed to answer precise questions. But modelling and exploration of ideas that fit the evidence also have their place. My current work focuses on abalone aquaculture, but I have also worked extensively on fisheries management, on abalone and on sharks. My approaches involve ecological field and lab experiments, as well as modelling. We have now pioneered the study of abalone immune responses, which are central to disease resistance in farms, and to the way they may be able to adapt to climate change effects – both higher temperatures and lower pH.
